Dhoomimal Gallery presents ‘Roop Aroop’, a solo show by Jogen Chowdhury curated by Abhishek Kashyap
One of the major modern masters of India known for bringing indigenous modernism to figurative art, Jogen Chowdhury needs no introduction. With a highly personalised stylisation that he perfected early on his career, Chowdhury has built a distinct body of work that encapsulates one of the most fearless uses of the line to portray serious as well as droll moments of human life—Chowdhury has used his unbroken line to present scars of human experiences as well as moments of ennui in human life with equal use. His line is also instantly recognisable as his signature by the lay admirers of art.
Chowdhury was born in 1939 in Faridpur in present-day Bangladesh and studied at Calcutta’s Government College of Arts and Crafts. In his long, stellar career, he has held several important public positions as well as exhibited his works in seminal shows in India and abroad.
This exhibition presents Chowdhury’s drawings and prints, which showcase his use of the line potently, often more powerfully than his paintings. The show is being presented in association with Gallery Jogen Chowdhury.
