B.C. Sanyal (b.1901) has explored several mediums such as oils, watercolour, tempera, bronze, terracotta, cement, wood, and plaster. His themes are based on the economically disadvantaged and rural demographic. He founded the Delhi Shilpi Chakra and also taught at the Delhi College of Art. His colours were fresh and his forms simple.

Sanyal studied painting at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata (1923–29), where he explored clay modeling. He also briefly attended the Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai (1940) to learn stone carving from Master Khimji, a traditional craftsman from Kathiawar. He was honored with a Fellowship for lifetime achievement by Lalit Kala Akademi (1980) and was awarded the Padma Bhushan (1984)as well. The Government of India, issued a special postage stamp to commemorate his birth centenary in 2000.
