Jogen Chowdhury (b. 1939) is one of India’s leading contemporary artists, known for his distinctive use of line, cross-hatching, and textured surfaces. Born in Faridpur (now in Bangladesh), he studied at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, and later at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Chowdhury’s work often explores the human form, marked by contorted postures and expressive detailing, reflecting both social realities and personal narratives. Blending traditional Indian motifs with modern sensibilities, his drawings, paintings, and ink works are celebrated for their quiet intensity and deeply personal visual language.
