Ganesh Haloi (b.1936) is known for his abstract scenes of land and sea. He started with landscapes of his surroundings and slowly abstraction took over, where trees became a collection of lines and dots instead. He was appointed by the Archaeological Survey of India to reproduce the frescoes of Ajanta, which also had an appearance in some of his works later. Haloi used gouache most of the time, along with Chinese ink and mixed media. Spans of blues, browns, and greens in strategically placed shapes and lines give his works a distinct look.

Haloi graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata (1956). He received the gold medal from the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata (1963-64 and 1970).  He has also been conferred the Rabindra Bharati Award, Kolkatta (1970), and received the Shiromani Puraskar, granted by the Government of India (1991).
