Probir Gupta View Artworks of Probir Gupta Back to Artist

Born in Kolkata in 1960, Probir Gupta graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata in 1981. He went on to study at École National Superiere de Beaux-arts, Paris on a two year French Government scholarship in 1982 and continued to live and work there till 1987.

Probir Gupta’s works have always leaned towards political content and activism. His works explore the dark underbelly of strong negative emotions like terror, rebellion and oppression – emotions experienced by those on either side of conflict. By getting into this complex terrain of the negative side of human subjectivity, Gupta’s works asks difficult and uncomfortable questions. As a viewer, you can possibly be confronted with the inherent negative emotions of your own subjectivity while encountering his works.

. In his compositions, both on canvas and sculptural, Gupta displays his sheer disgust over present political situations and, simultaneously, his passionate involvement with human rights issues and his interest in human beings’ constant struggle for justice and equality.

He participated in seminal National and International exhibitions such as Probir Gupta, Alexia Goethe Gallery, London, U.K (2008), At Half Mast, Bose Pacia, U.S.A, Nature Morte, Kolkata, India (2007), 4th St. Petersburg International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Manege Central Exhibition Hall, St. Petersburg, Russia (1999), Hommage to ARTAUD by 20 Contemporary artists, Eicher Gallery, New Delhi (1997), VIth Biennale, Bharat Bhavan (1995), Liberty of Maison des Cultures du Monde et Musée des Invalids, Paris (1990), Collective Exhibition in Brussels (1986) and Théâtre Renaud Barrault, Paris, France. His works were received well at the International Art Festival in Perth (2000). His first solo exhibition in France was held in Caen, Normandie in 1984, followed by a significant exhibition of his works at Palais Des Beaux-arts, Brussels in 1986. His last solo exhibition was held in 2010 at Nature Morte, Delhi.
