Sadanand Bakre View Artworks of Sadanand Bakre Back to Artist

Born in Baroda in 1920, Sadanand Bakre joined the Gokhale Education Society School when his family moved to Bombay. His talent in art was noticed by his drawing teacher and he was encouraged to paint. He thus began to take painting seriously and at the age of 16, Bakre held his first solo exhibition of drawings of figures, still life, watercolour landscapes and clay models of drapery at his school.

Sadanand Bakre joined the Sculpture department of the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art in 1939 where he was trained in a purely Academic Realist style. In 1944, he received a Diploma in Sculpture and was awarded the Lord Harding Scholarship.

One of the founding members of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group, Sadanand Bakre was never the one to tow the established line. He was known for his innovative sculpting techniques. Bakre’s quest for charting his own course was always leading him to search for newer methods, materials and forms of expression.

This search became an important turning point in his life when he went to Britain in 1951. He thereafter moved more towards painting. Bakre’s talent was further encouraged and honed by the leading art critic Rudy Von Leyden, who introduced him to the modernist movements in Europe and America. In the 1960’s, Bakre style underwent an evolution from the ‘spiky forms’ to more simplified forms with a growing interest in structure.

His works, even though small in nature, were expressive to the core. He used a wide variety of materials.

Sadanand Bakre returned to India in 1975, after having spent a considerable amount of time in Europe. He is known to have led a secluded life in later years.

The artist received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bombay Art Society in 2004.

Sadanand Bakre passed of a heart attack in 2007.
