Born in 1937 in what is now Bangladesh, Arpita Singh studied at the School of Art, Delhi Polytechnic in New Delhi from 1954 to 1959. After completing her graduation, she worked for the Indian government’s Cottage Industries Restoration Program where she met traditional artists who in turn deeply inspired her and influenced her art.

Arpita Singh is known for telling compelling, visually evocative stories of women in Indian society. Be it her drawings, water colours on paper or oils on canvas, there is story about the myriad struggles of women everywhere. Her canvas is universal in that even if the subjects portrayed are specific, the paintings catch the essence of universal manifestations of womanhood, as it were. And that is where the greatness of her works lies. Her works transcend the immediate and speak in a visually evocative language to the global viewer.

The artist’s colours are vibrant, her palette usually dominated by pinks and blues, and her paintings burst at the seams with teeming life forms and objects or motifs like guns, cars, planes, animals, trees and flowers. She effortlessly uses traditional Indian art forms like miniature painting and different forms of folk art in her works and weaves these within the larger rubric of her modernist painting.

The artist has exhibited widely across India and abroad. She is the recipient of several prestigious awards including an award at the All India Drawing Exhibition at Chandigarh in 1981 and 1992 and an award at the Algeria Biennale in 1987. The Sahitya Kala Parishad, New Delhi honoured her with ‘Parishad Samman’ in 1991.

Arpita Singh lives and works in New Delhi.
