Born in 1948 in Rajasthan, Rameshwar Singh received his Masters in Drawing and Painting from Udaipur University in 1982. The artists through his works combines his fascination for classical Indian art forms with modern sensibilities. He is fascinated with all things antiquity and yet the final creation is embedded in a contemporary syntax due to the artist’s novel treatment.
Rameshwar Singh is deeply influenced by India’s rich ancient heritage and culture. The magnificent architecture of his own state of Rajasthan has fascinated him endlessly. Old calligraphy, scripts and architecture find a frequent expression in the artist’s works. The artist is also a preserver of India’s ancient cultural heritage in the sense that he meticulously explores these as a subject matter rather than using modern day events and scenes as subject matter.
Legendary artist F.N. Souza who is also Rameshwar Singh’s fellow painter has commented on his works, “His paintings are very compact; there is a lot in them: figures, forms and mythological content. Very colourful too. The forms are carefully constructed; there is craftsmanship in his work and skill. Sort of magic mantras and omens appear mysteriously in Rameshwar’s paintings.
1982 Master of Arts (Drawing and Painting), Udaipur University
